Re: japanese word for "p.m."

I'm self studying through the Genki textbook, and the textbook
indicates that the japanese word for p.m. is ごご. When I listen the
audio cd, however, it sounds to me like gomo, which I would think
should be spelled ごも.

You may be hearing the "g" nasalised. Try saying "go-ngo" (where "ng"
is the sound those letters have in "gong"). Is that closer to what
you're hearing?

There's other times when I have had similar doubts when listening to
the audio, do I trust the audio cd, or the text?

Trust audio of native speakers for pronunciation. Trust your textbook
for orthography. Revel in the joys of the evolution of natural
language and pronunciation drift.
