What's with that huge expanse of white and then grey at the bottom? And
why does it freeze FireFox when I try to page-up from the bottom, to see
if there's anything else there?

Looked fine on my (technically my mum's) Firefox 1.5.0.7. Actually there was
a temporary freeze of Firefox but that was when looking at another tab
quite a bit later so I didn't connect the dots.

I had no problems with either Firefox 1.5.0.7 or the older
Firefox 1.0.8. No freezes; no expanses of white and grey.

I'll just put it down to Linux's bulletproofedness.....

It seemed OK on my Linux (1.0.4, for Debian), too, but it would take
forever to scroll down and see whether there's grey at the bottom, even
without reading it all.

I did notice the scroll wheel didn't work over the text, only in the
left margin, and outside the border on the right. (Later I took a
chance and used the scroll bars to to get to the bottoms, without
crashing anything! But no grey or white expanses anywhere.)
