Incidentally, what's the equivalent of the IME for a Mac? The Java
language input thing?

The Mac keyboard switcher and input system is somewhat better than that
of Windows. User language switching and universal Unicode support is
significantly better than that of Windows. It's mostly why I switched
originally; Japanese was too much of a hassle in Windows, but it's
seamless in OS X.

I find the Windows XP environment provides better support for older
non-Unicode programs. I have a number of Loga-Vista dictionary programs
that came with both Mac and PC versions. They work perfectly under Windows
XP but not with OS X. Before Windows XP came out, I felt the Mac
multi-lingual support was better. However, now I lean towards the PC.

There are at least two big differences:

1. The interface paradigm is quite different, in a non-trivial way. OS
X is document-centric, while Windows is application-centric. Both ways
have their proponents.

2. Having the same company design the hardware, the OS, and the core
applications makes for a smoother user experience in general.
Everything is guaranteed to work together.

That's the Apple approach. It is both a strength (as you've alluded to)
and a weakness. The more proprietary Apple approach also discourages
outside developers and makes it harder to integrate outside offerings in a
coherent and cohesive fashion. I have both a PC and a Mac. I wish my PC
was as secure and user friendly as my Mac. I wish my Mac had the same
range and depth of software as my PC. The insular approach Apple is taking
is really hurting it. It used to be that the Apple was an order of
magnitude better than the PC when it came to desktop publishing, film
editing, and other mutli-media applications. Today, Apple is lagging
behind the PC because it is unable to attract the developers. Since you
buy a computer for its software, I am afraid that my elegant Mac is fast
becoming a dinosaur.
