I've found that many Japanese who address their parents as おとうさん and おかあさん
refer to them as とうさん and かあさん when speaking to others. I was in my
Japanese bookstore the other day and remarked that I had not seen one of
the clerks for a while. She began her answer with とうさんはね going on to
explain that her father had to go back to Japan for a month and so she
needed to take care of things around the house.
