All I need is a list of names for the 240-odd elements. The names
could be in Jpaanese or English, and the former can be in kana.

What about allowing single-letter codes for the main elements? Using
upper & lower case, that gives you 52 codes (plus, with some ingenuity,
another 10 using digits). Requires a bit of memorizing, but would have
the benefit of allowing really fast lookup once you know the codes
(which might include h for "sun" & H for "fire" -- sorry, haven't
mastered Japanese input yet). In principle, typing something like
"hKm" should lead you straight to a character -- or at worst a small
selection.

Just a suggestion!

The idea doesn't appeal to me.. The present visual system works fine
and it wouldn't be too hard to extend to element names since they are
used in other systems, but I wouldn't like to introduce a totally new
artificial coding. Hell, who'd want to remember a new repertoire
of 240 alphanumeric codes? At least "mizu", "sanzui", "kororo", etc.
have mnemonic properties.
