First, the
children have to be taught an understanding of the abstract concept of
representing sounds with marks on paper.

Well, that is just a ludicrous statement. I think generally speaking the children already understand the concept of "writing" before they start school, unless their parents are illiterate or something.

Second, young children have to be
taught the artistic skills of 'drawing' the letters. An adult already has
acquired both the concept of phonetics and the facility with pen and paper.

I don't think so. Have you seen the way that Japanese children learn hiragana?

A child has difficulty writing a simple hiragana such as く for the first
time. An adult can write a more complicated character like あ on the first
time.

I have some doubts about that. The children probably find it easier to learn than the adults.

Both the adult and the child might have trouble remembering the
sounds to which the characters refer.

I really don't think so - the Japanese children won't have this problem.

When I have taught hiragana, I have done so in conjunction with teaching
the pronunciation. The people I have taught have mastered writing the
letters faster than acquiring good pronunciation.

That's nice but I'm not sure what it proves.
