"G" Pronunciation: Is it hard word initialy or utterance initially?

I have learned the the 'G' sound is pronunced as 'NG', except in the
beggining of words.

It seems logical that the hard 'g' sound would soften to 'ng' whever it
is not preceded by a pause. Or is would it really be hard whenever it
begins a new word? Also, I think the particle 'ga' is usually said with
the soft nasal sound.

Can anyone clear up the matter?
thnx

Sir John
