Does this just mean the frog is hiding or resting "flat-like" in some
lichen in a cavern?

It's a mossy cavern, the frog is in the cavern not (specifically) the moss.

I thought ぺしゃんこ meant "squashed by force".

Ditto. Do you have any reason to believe differently?


Usually it's ぺちゃんこ instead.
ぺしゃんこ is either dialect or personal variation of it.
Sometimes said ぺたんこ, ぺったんこ or ぺっちゃんこ.
