In this case, mixing polite form and non-polite form causes
a little problem, the last part 何でそういうのか sounds me a little odd.
or
Makes it more natural.
(Mixing forms may not always be bad, though.)
I'm sure you're right.
I think I posted too fast in this case. I don't know if native Japanese speakers check their Japanese language posts, but even when I write English I slip up a lot, which is why I usually reread my posts before posting them to check the English is OK. In this case I didn't reread my Japanese.
No, as the second thought, probably 「何でそういうのか」itself
is odd, not because of mixing polite/non-polite forms.
So, NSoJ would say:
That's interesting. I'm never particularly clear on when or when not to use this kind of construction.
そういうこと can be そんんこと as well.
You thought "Why you say so", and my version is "why you say such a thing".
I can't explain why the former sounds me odd. (but it does)
(well, your correction of my stoned English is welcome. :)
How do you say "Herculean task" in Japanese?
