Hi

Something that I've wondered for a long time: How do Japanese
people visualize ano, are, asoko, etc?

Is it...

Me -----> thing <---------- Other party

or...

(Me and other party standing next to each other) -----------> thing?

I think the latter image is closer, because knowledge you share in common (i.e. have a common standpoint on) uses ano, are, and asoko.

"Ano kissaten-wa yokatta ne!"
That café (we both know about) was great, wasn't it?

Pera-Pera Penguin has a nice column on the abstract distinctions of a/so/ko. Google for it if you're interested.
