OK, then explain it to the RFC people who seem not to
recommend using 8-bit code on the Internet mail and the like
News Is Not Mail. (unencoded) 8-bit in mail is not recommended
because there are known to be problems in some widely deployed
mail servers which will mangle your mail. News servers, on the
other hand, are (almost?) all 8-bit clean. As Paul says, the
news software with problems is almost always the client.
e-mail communitity. As I understand it the reservations about 8-bit code
relate only to older platforms and e-mail programs. The Internet Mail
Consortium recommends that e-mail programs have the capability to create
and read UTF-8 mail. The only major English language e-mail program that
does not have this capability built-in is Eudora. With Eudora, you can
acquire the capability by using a plug-in. Eudora has announced that their
next major upgrade will incorporate UTF-8 capabilities.
