Re: Several pages of calendar need translation

On the other hand, if this is a hoax, well then it's pretty well done.
And for that, I thank him! :) The only thing that really makes me think
it might be a hoax is - how dumb would someone have to be to write all
those little heart marks on a calendar?

Japanese women write little heart marks everywhere though.

Quite true. Drawing hearts and stars everywhere doesn't mean a Japanese
woman's in love or an astronomer. That kind of cutesy fun seems to be
built into the culture; though I can see why a monolingual American
husband might not understand.

If this was her private
calendar, why the English? If it's a calendar for everyone to see
(i.e., in the kitchen, etc.) then the comments seem excessively verbose
(especially the entry under Dec 26 - "I love Leon, my heart's all
aflutter, he makes me want more, but I don't think it will work out...
I love Leon, and that's enough for me, just to meet every once in a
while... God, forgive me...") Why would anyone write that much in a
calendar?

She wants an opportunity to express herself? Doesn't have anyone to talk to?

I agree this is likely. Most of the Japanese women I've met are
sentimental and friendly, interested in making friends with people who
will actually listen to and understand them. One of my very best
friends is the Japanese wife of a Canadian buddy. We hang out
sometimes, and if I do her a favour she'll message me a thank-you note
with little animated hearts and stuff. It doesn't mean anything
romantic, it's just what Japanese girls are like.

I don't know "Steve", but the fact that he doesn't know his wife's
language suggests there's a lot about her and her culture he also
doesn't get. Not meaning to point fingers, but surely in 15 years of
marriage he could have learned the language of the person who is
supposedly the most important to him.

At any rate, the his wife clearly finds something meaningful in her
friendship with that Leon fellow, and she's not content to be the fat
American housewife who stays at home with the kitchen and watches soaps
all day. She may even have affection for Leon like a close friend
might. Is that really such a problem?
