It's not my field, but I think 巡礼 (junrei) is what you want.
There are many famous 巡礼 such as 四国巡礼 and 西国巡礼.
I recently read some of 円仁 (Ennin)'s 入唐求法巡礼行記
(Nittou guhou junrei kouki).
You also try 巡拝 (junpai).
