Yeah but I don't _want_ it to do that when I'm doing Japanese text searches, or English for that matter (capitalisation aside).
It *should* be smart enough to at least find equivalent kanji results for kana search queries and that sort of thing.
Google does consider some Japanese words as 'equivalent'. For example ダイヤモンド vs ダイアモンド.
yahoo.co.jp has a more extensive range of 'same word, different
way of writing it' entries and (more important as far as I'm
concerned) it also allows you to turn off the feature easily.
If you enter a word with excessive, or insufficient, kanji Yahoo.co.jp
will often suggest the alternative.
