Odd use of kau

In Iriyaddo, volume 6, page 114, a politician and an older fellow are discussing the politician's late father. The older man says:

お父上は、語学の才能を買われたようです。英語、フランス語、ラテン語、ギリシア語、アラビア語、……日本語まで！

What exactly is 買われる saying there?
