I looked in two before posting, and thought it might be idiomatic. Prompted by your post to look at my more complete paper dictionary (Kenkyusha's Lighthouse), I see definition #3 is "hold in high regard". In other word's the man's linguistic talents were highly regarded.

Incidentally I'm a little disappointed at the number of people contributing
Edict entries. I'm sure there must be more than four people who regularly
Edict, often come across words/meanings not in there and have the ability to put together a submission.
I think a reasonable aim* would be to have about twice as many entries in
Edict as there are now (which would bring it close to the range of 国語
dictionaries like 大辞林 and 広辞苑). At the current rate that's going to
take about a decade.
