I'm an intermediate student (in Japanese for Busy People
Vol. II), and I think I would benefit from a detailed
description of the grammar. The only grammar books I
Well, besides grammar, you should also look into books that explain when to use certain similar words such as assari vs. sappari vs karatto.
eg. Effective japanese Usage Dictionary is a great reference for these words.
---
Some like Making Sense of Japanese Grammar are simply not worth the time or effort -- too much like a brochure rather than a reference.
Understanding Basic Japanese Grammar is a good book for beginning to intermediate learners -- covers just about everything you'll typically learn in basic - intermediate courses. Language is kept to Level 3 of the JLPT in this book.
Master the Basics Japanese is simpler, in romanji/english only, but a decent reference for the very beginners.

So out of these, I'd pick up Understanding Basic Japanese Grammar first and also check out similar books in any Japanese bookstore.
(hmmm, you're right about not many grammar only books out there -- despite scanning in all of my language books into 12GB+ worth of DVDs, even I realize there aren't many such books in my collection...figure you've just got to go there, use the language, and pick it up in real life to understand some of the nuances of Japanese...)
