Very little anime has Japanese subtitles including major theatrical
releases. I make it a point of looking.

People keep saying that, which is odd because the last time I was in the
Japan Bookshop out of around a dozen anime DVDs only one
didn't have subtitles.

All my Miyazaki titles do. My スレーヤーズ LD boxed set does as well.
Those are all the Japanese market DVDs and LDs that I own. I have
watched the "Ah My Goddess" movie with Japanese subtitles, but I didn't
own the disc so I don't know what edition it was.

I guess the Slayers LD boxed set has the subtitles as closed captions. I
have quite a few laser disks. As far as I know, none of them have
subtitles. I say as far as I know because the laser disk box covers and
disk covers say nothing about it. I have not tried to turn on closed
captions to see if there are captions that simply are not advertised. Do
your Slayers disks state on the box cover or disk covers that they are
subtitled?

Surprisingly, I found my Ah! My Goddess DVD without difficulty. I got it
when it was first released - it came in a fancy box at an exhorbitant price
with a lot of extras like postcards, trading cards, a special DVD disk in
addition to the movie. However, it was not subtitled. There was, however,
an anime comic for the movie that came out in three volumes - published by
Anime KC-Afternoon at 857 yen apiece without tax.
