My pet hate is people who elbow their way past their fellow countrymen
when getting off the train, then offer a deferential "Excuse me" (in
English, which for all they know I might not even speak) as they skirt
round me. Strikes me as the height of hypocrisy!
Even more so when the guy suddenly remembers there's something about
"ladies first" when gaigin women are involved. He's pushed aside three
grannies and a pregnant woman carrying a screaming toddler in his rush
to get to the last empty seat in the crowded train, and suddenly stops
to usher me into it, with deep bowing and katakana apologies.
So I give it to the pregnant woman with the toddler.
So she puts the toddler onto it.....
Uh, oh.... Never mind.
I've always rather enjoyed beating one of the slouching zoku-of-the-week
to a seat and then giving it to a protesting obachan, but then I don't
have to live and work in Tokyo.
