I've discovered that when I read Japanese aloud my comprehension
drops precipitously. Reading the characters, understanding the
expression, and converting this to speech overloads my brain's
processing power when done all at once. This is a very interesting
discovery.
Hmm, I can read romaji Japanese with about the same comprehension as I
read it in kanji just by mentally "reading it aloud". I've never been
able to credit the claims of people who say that they can't understand
Japanese written in romaji, especially those who use it for writing
their native language.
For me, romaji is very confusing. I far prefer hiragana. I'm still
working on kanji. Perhaps by the time I learn all 1945 standard Kanji,
I'll be as confident in romaji translation as I am with hiragana.
I've almost given up on katakana though. ;-)
