Hello,
On page 191, example D, in "Advanced Spoken Japanese: Tonari no
Shibafu," volume 1, lessons 1-9 of 18, by Katsuhiko Sakuma and
Frank T. Motofuji (Institute for East Asian Studies, University of
California, Berkeley, 1980, ISBN: 0-9129-6623-8), they say
いらっしゃる comes from 来.
来る is one of the lexical *meanings*.
Now, 来 is らい, so is いらっしゃい an い
plus らい plus する?
No.
Or, is 来車 the origin of いらっしゃい?
No.
Or, as usual, am I reading too much into this?
Yes.
(In easy form ignoring roots)
irassyai < irassyaru < iraseraru < iru + se + raru.
Also note the modern verb iraserareru.
