Re: Amazing subtitles

I will also be interested to see how Robin Williams' line "Stop spanking
that monkey!" gets translated in the Japanese version of Night Museum
when it opens in Japan later this month.

A couple of years ago I posted the following on the honyaku list:

*The Australian crime novel author Shane Maloney has written a witty
*article about the translation of his books into various languages. It
*was reprinted in the Age and SMH last month, and I have put a copy at
*http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/maloneytrans.html if anyone is
*interested.

*He contrasts the cases where there was considerable dialogue with the
*translator about vocabulary, vernacular usage, etc. (e.g. French) with
*the cases where there was none at all (e.g. Finnish and Japanese).

*After reading the article, I feel like tracking down a copy of a Japanese
*translation, as I have an insane desire to find out whether "Yakusha-san"
*translated "far canal" as 遠い運河.
