Of course he meant that (except for that い on the end--if he had added
the unnecessary kana, it would have been ひ). Good catch! (I'm ashamed
to say I missed it too, but I'm kinda old already).

Ah, but I must commend you for catching the stray い. :-)
Actually, I was thinking it should be 歷史的假名遣, if you wanted to get
really anal about it. But I think writing the first character with 禾
instead of 木 isn't even done anymore in Taiwan or Hong Kong. At least
I remember noticing it being 歴 at some point.
