I don't think publishers totally made the switch to the new kana-zukai
until the 50's, so "pre-war" is misleading, but one thing that you
sometimes come across in old bunkobon is editing artifacts, including
big tsu's and old forms of characters, which are a result of human
error during conversion of the type for an older edition.

In fact, I've already come across two editing artifacts (one big tsu,
one old character) in the 34th printing (1980) of 松本清張's "張込み" that
I'm reading now.
