Help with encoding

I have a penpal and she send me letter the kanjis in which
i can read. When i write to her, however, the 漢字 become
unreadable to her but not like those ??? people can get
but more of a text full of different characters.

I can send to self and to here with unicode with no
problems. She claims that she can read other peoples
letters just fine. The same problem occurs to the swedish
letters åäö as well.

Any suggestions what can be wrong and how to kill it?
