I'm guessing words that are difficult to distinguish,
possibly particularly for Japanese.

Prayer vs Player
etc.

I used to have a list of a couple of dozen or so extracted
from a high-frequency English word list but I don't think
the file is still around.

Agreed. Here's an English language site that uses homophones as part of
the instruction.
