Tosh. The word I am using is illocutionary. Elocution is something quite
different.

See the work of the linguist John L. Austin for an explanation of
illocutionary acts. See in particular the work of David Holcroft for an
explanation of illocutionary force.

There has been considerable discussion and refinement of the concept that
Austin introduced in the fifties and Holdcroft expanded upon in the
seventies. In a previous post, I recommended "Illocutionary Acts and
Sentence Meaning (Hardcover) by William P. Alston (2000)" that incorporates
both the original concepts and its evolution. I'm not disparaging the
earlier works - I took my most recent formal linguistics course in 1973 -
however, there is value in looking at the thoughts that have withstood the
test of time.
