Hum, I think that just *listening* to a good quantity of actual japanese
already would help a lot. That could be a great shock though at first
after only being confronted to japanese in text book. I think they are
some news programs aired on the internet, but it might be not en easy
start, and something with subtitles would be better.
Agreed. DVDs are great. You can get Japanese region 2 DVDs that have
English and Japanese subs. So you can listen to the Japanese dialog while
reading it. If there's something you don't understand, you can switch to
English subtitles. Japanese subtitles come in two forms. One is an exact
rendition of the dialog - a subtitled for the deaf and hard of hearing
(SDHH) or equivalent. The other often paraphrases the dialog and is not an
exact rendition. Both forms are of value to a language learner but in
slightly different ways.
