Reading books with lots of dialog is one way to accustom yourself to
grammatical dialog. I like Akagawa Jirou. His 名探偵、大集合 (Meitantei,
Daishuugou - Large Collection of Famous Detectives) is a good place to
start. It contains five novellas that are representative stories of some
of his most well-known series. It will give you a flavor of how he writes
and, if you like him, give you samples to help you select a series to dive
into. It's recent (2006) and widely available at a mere 700 yen - here it
