I've heard of an old font layout issue where certain Japanese fonts used to insert a yen symbol in place of the rarely used backslash. I'm astonished, though, that this mix-up would persist in Microsoft's software today, since everything should be using Unicode.
On my computer the above is

Typing two backslashes while in Japanese full-width
input mode drops you into half-width 'direct input' mode
and changes the characters from full-width to half-width.
I find it faster to type [backslash][backslash][backspace][backspace]
than it is to use the mouse to select direct input on the IME
toolbar.
I suppose there should/could be a shorter short-cut but I've
never got round to looking for/making one.
What's wrong with Alt-tilde? Doesn't it work on a British keyboard?
