The movie's not that great, but I did notice something interesting. Aoki Devon spoke her Japanese with such a heavy accent, even I was cringing (and her emphasis and timing suggests she learned it phonetically).
How many of us non-native speakers can tell the difference between a native speaker's accent from a non-native speaker's accent? Most of the time I can't tell the difference between accents at all. For example, I can only tell an Osaka-ben user from the dialect, not the accent.
I can generally distinguish the accent of Hawaiians of Japanese extraction
who are bilingual in English and Japanese but whose preferred language is
English. Their Japanese may be perfectly grammatical but they speak with a
noticeable 'Japanese-Hawaiian' accent.
The notion that there might be "Hawaiians of Japanese extraction
who are bilingual in English and Japanese" is pretty debatable, it seems to me. I've certainly never known one in my 32 years here.
