It's usually easy, and I can often tell where someone is from through
their English/US/French-based Japanese pronouciation.
Most of the
time I can't tell the difference between accents at all. For example, I
can only tell an Osaka-ben user from the dialect, not the accent.
Funnily enough, I can't spot an Osaka accent (or any other accent)
when someone is speaking hyojun-go, but I can tell immediately when a
non-Kansai person tries to speak in Osaka-ben! Occassionally when they
have TV reconstructions, for instance, the budget doesn't extend to
getting a real Osaka person to play a part, and the wrong intonation
really grates. Perhaps someone (Phil Yff?) can dig up a clip on
YouTube of Conan's Kansai friend who sometimes appears with an accent
as fake as a nine-sen note.
Oh, and I am completely HLLLH tone-deaf.
