I've been using Debian (currently Sarge) for about five years (for everything that Amiga can't do better--including handle Japanese), and I see you're already way ahead of me.
I ended up using UIM-Anthy instead of SCIM-Anthy (I don't remember why--if it was more than two hours ago, I usually forget), but I copied out the above for later experimentation.
I was watching your discussion with a little envy. :)
Without your thread I wouldn't know the word SCIM nor Anthy...
I was interested in Linux/GNU things when I first read stories about
them (in 1993?) but used Windows because it is/was my work.
(and I didn't buy my own PC... I used what is given for work...)
Now I learned to shrink the windows partition and made place to install Linux.
(after confirming almost all I need/want to do personally can be done on
open source things.)

Ctrl-Space brings SCIM bar up for all X-window programs. (so far).
