more to the point, I know how Japanese people use it, and they don't
use it like that.


Google あいにくね and I think you'll find differently - although it's a moot
point because I think we're agreed on the translation.

I didn't find anything in the first ten googlits that supported the usage.

I can hardly claim to know how Japanese people use anything, but "kawaisou ainiku ne" sounds to me sort of like "Isn't it a shame/Too bad that she's to be pitied" or "What a shame that she's pitiful."
