In Japanese that is. How do people write into the group? Sometimes I see
odd characters that aren't Japanese so assuming I don't have quite the
proper fonts.

However I did find my wp software (Unitype Global writer) that
supposedly lets me write in hiragana and kanji (get to pick and choose
after entering the words in romaji). However cut-and-paste didn't work.
Do I need something different?

Below, is the same passage, I included before - the opening preamble to
"Jigoku Shoujo - Hutakomori." This time, though, it's encoded in UTF-8.
Your news reader should be able to read it whether it is set to iso-2022-jp
or UTF-8. If it doesn't, then we can figure out what the problem is.

In order to use character sets from more than on language in a post or
e-mail, you should be able to set the encoding and use the encoding you
set. I'm not familiear with Unitype Global writer, but it sounds to me
like it should support unicode encoding. If you know how to look at a
message header or e-mail header, you can see what encoding you're using.
For example, I can see that your post is encoded with iso-2022-jp by
looking at the header of your post. This means your word processor
supports iso-2022-jp in addition to unicode encoding.

Cutting and pasting often works but sometimes it does not. The most common
problem is when the software from which you are cutting (in this case the
wp) uses a different encoding scheme from the software in which you are
pasting (in this case the newsreader). The key to resolving conflicts is
knowing how to find out what encoding schemes the source and target
software are using and how to change them. As I said, I'm not familiar
with Unitype Globa writer so I don't know how to set the encoding.
However, if you use its help feature to inquire about 'character encoding',
'character sets', 'unicode', or the like, you should be able to find out
fairly easily.

Here's the UTF-8 test.

TY the UTF-8 test was a bust. Lots of 'missing' characters.

Not using a stand-alone wp as such when writing to the group; the
message window includes the 'reply' option and just needs entering
before clicking the 'send' button.

Thanks for your time. Will get this worked out eventually! Might need to
reload Global IME; icon shows up but can't switch it on...may not have
installed something important.

As a test, copy and paste the Japanese from my UTF-8 post into your word
processor. Since it's called Unitype Global writer, my assumption is that
it should be able to read UTF-8.

The UTF-8 Japanese was transformed in the reply. It cannot be restored by
changing the character encoding. This is the header info in your reply:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-2022-jp
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

This is the header info in my post:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit
