TY the UTF-8 test was a bust. Lots of 'missing' characters.

Not using a stand-alone wp as such when writing to the group; the
message window includes the 'reply' option and just needs entering
before clicking the 'send' button.

Thanks for your time. Will get this worked out eventually! Might need to
reload Global IME; icon shows up but can't switch it on...may not have
installed something important.

As a test, copy and paste the Japanese from my UTF-8 post into your word
processor. Since it's called Unitype Global writer, my assumption is that
it should be able to read UTF-8.

The UTF-8 Japanese was transformed in the reply. It cannot be restored by
changing the character encoding. This is the header info in your reply:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-2022-jp
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit

This is the header info in my post:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset="utf-8"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit

TY I'm not even getting that type of header at all. Have no info on what
your character set is. Will try the cut-and-paste.

If your newsreader doesn't show the header or you don't know how to display
it, at least while you're figuring things out you can use Google Groups.
Click the 'more options' link at the top right of a post. It will display
an additional line of choices as links. Click on 'show original'. That
will bring up the header info for the post.

Cut-and-paste worked for the is-2022-jp encoding (and the UTF-8 as well
but minus those few kanji) but only *into* the wp program.
When I tried to then cut and paste the text back (either encoding) just
jumble (Japanese jumble?) showed on my newsreader screen.

Sooner or later something will work.

Thanks everyone for your help.
