odd characters that aren't Japanese so assuming I don't have quite the
proper fonts.
However I did find my wp software (Unitype Global writer) that
supposedly lets me write in hiragana and kanji (get to pick and choose
after entering the words in romaji). However cut-and-paste didn't work.
Do I need something different?
The header information in your post indicates you are in a Windows
environment and it might be Windows 98. If your Windows version is 2000 or
later, you can set something called an input method editor that allows you
to type Japanese directly into your post rather than cut or paste. If you
are on Windows 2000 or later and need to know how to do this, I will be
more than happy to post instructions.
TY.No not tedious at all!
Yes it is Windows98. I know that later versions of Windows include the
IME. Did download it once but may not have selected the right
components. Will try again this week.
One of the issues is that full Unicode compliance requires 32 bit code.
Windows 98 is built on a lot of 16 bit code. Thus, on occasion, you're
going to run across stuff that is not compatible with Windows 98.
Where you have problems, Google Groups, in spite of its problems may be
able to help you out should you have conflicts. For example, I can see the
Japanese in both my test posts looking at the thread in Google Groups. My
browser automatically selects UTF-8 for character encoding. Had it not
done so, I could have changed it by clicking on 'View' then 'Character
encoding' and selecting UTF-8.

Did switch my character encoding to UTF-8 and it didn't help at all...
Back to the drawing board (or something).
There's a group called misc.test where you can play around if you want to.
Include the word 'ignore' anywhere in the subject to prevent notifications
that are useful in tracking propagation but aren't germane to your issue.
One test I would do is try cutting and pasting from sources other than your
word processor to see what happens. For example, go to a web page where
you know the encoding (by checking View and Character Encoding in your
browser. See what happens when you post various things. Look at your
posts both through your regular newsreader and Google Groups. If you do
decide to run some tests in misc.test, I'll be more than happy to keep an
eye on them and see if I can figure something out.

Thank you very much! It sounds like a plan!
