learning only spoken Japanese?

Does anyone have experience with this?

I am living in Australia, and mainly just want to learn Japanese as an
adjucnt to my passion for Judo. It would be nice to more easily
converse with the occasional Japanese person I meet, and perhaps one
day in 20 years I'll get to visit Japan for a brief holiday. So, I
don't see that I should bother trying to memorize all the characters.

Any advice or opinions on the above?

thanks,
Charlie
