So I've been trying to learn another language...

I believe that Japanese should be a challenge to learn, as well as be
useful in some later point in time. I have been currently researching
various methods to begin my study and have come up with a great deal
of advertisements which I am not entirely sure about. After a quick
background check on many of these websites; I have come up with a
plethora of contradicting statements and have been left more confused
than ever. I was considering taking a class in a local college, but my
current schedule will not make that an option until 2009. So I am left
with only a few options...
A.) Start early with some sort of "learn at your leisure" program.
B.) Squeeze through with the introductory classes now and risk
exhaustion.
I am already set on my first option, yet I am still lost as to where
to begin. A quick search of this group has come up with very little,
and I am merely trying to start a basis for when I do find the time to
take the full blown class. So my question to all you that are reading
this is "What to buy and what to avoid?"
.
