what to avoid?"

What you buy will have far less effect on your learning than what you
do.

Of all things to learn, a language is particularly insusceptible to
learning by buying materials and self-studying only. Your first
priority should be to find other people who speak the language, at a
level higher than you, with whom you can converse face-to-face;
ideally, native speakers of the language.
