So my question to all you that are reading this is "What to buy and
what to avoid?"

What you buy will have far less effect on your learning than what you
do.

Of all things to learn, a language is particularly insusceptible to
learning by buying materials and self-studying only. Your first
priority should be to find other people who speak the language, at a
level higher than you, with whom you can converse face-to-face;
ideally, native speakers of the language.

That's a great suggestion, but I was thinking more along the lines of
a dictionary? I am pretty sure you can't buy people in this day and
age and I doubt I can bother myself in finding people just to bother
them with my language questions. In short I am pretty sure I can gain
a foothold (or at least some form of language familiarity) without the
aid of a native speaker. I am not new to the subject of learning a
language, in fact, my English is a second language. I would appreciate
it if you could comply with my request in suggesting some sort of
basis short of finding a native speaker (and face to face of all!).

If for some reason you do not wish or cannot seem to suggest any sort
of item, I will just leave you all be.
