chotto

Offhand, I think someone is so self-conscious
of his ability of seeing things, to the extent
of being pathetic, that he is seeking constantly
allies as for confirmations of his observations
whatever they may be.

It so happens that he encounters the sentence:
The plane "is totally destroyed," and "there are
few chances of finding the survivors," ...

He takes the 'few' as 'no', but he can't be sure
of that observation, for some of him whispers,
'No, it can't be. The 'few' can't be 'none',
if it is not modified as to be 'perhaps none'.

But he can't see how in this world 'none'
and 'perhaps none' are possibly calibrated
so in practice.

Torn between the two interpretations,
that is, 'none' and 'perhaps none',
he tentatively says to himself:

Either depends on the context given,
so that if he meant the 'few' to be 'none,
he was to say the 'few' more emphatically
than otherwise, if the situation given
so warranted.

Anyone who sympathizes with him
will be greatly appreciated
if he would be so kind as to make
any comments.
