Of all things to learn, a language is particularly insusceptible

ideally, native speakers of the language.

suggesting some sort of basis short of finding a native speaker (and
face to face of all!).

The reason that I gave the above suggestion was not because of any
refusal to comply, but rather that the suggestion applies no matter
your goals for learning the language.

As for suggestions on what material would be useful, that *does*
depend on your goals. So, why are you learning Japanese, and what do
you hope to be able to do with the language?
