Only for programs that will not play nicely with UTF-8.

Ironic that Ubuntu is trying to be an international-friendly operating
system but places UTF-8 and input methods low on the bug-fix list. But
I digress, Linux will continue to be developed because one day,
Microsoft might not be here.

Actually, UNIX was created by programmers, for programmers.
Incidentally, it provided exceptional capabilities to anyone
willing to spend a bit of time becoming "computer-friendly."

There are many top-notch programmers who liked that approach.
Legal issues and intellectual property rights meant UNIX
could no longer be developed in this fashion, so an alternative
had to be found. And was. In the work of Linus Torvald.

THAT is why Linux will survive and prosper. It is not the
OS for everyone. And it may not be everything for anyone.
But for my money, and time, it is the best around. Top-notch
programmers, creating system software to allow other programmers
to do what they need to do, easily. The rest will follow.

Cheers!

UNIX is not user-unfriendly; it merely
expects users to be computer-friendly.
