: There is a Farsi/Dari speaking minority within Afghanistan who live
: mainly in Kabul. Are they the same as the Tajikis? Or are they 2
: different things?
it's about 40% of the population and one of the 2 official languages of
the country. another important center is Herat. there are also speakers in
the North alnog the Tajik border, also the Uzbek one, amongst Uzbeks.
ethnically they are usually refered to as Tajiks. linguistically there isa
dialect continuum between essentailly Iranian persian (Farsi) in Herat to
the Kabul dialect to the Tajik dialect in the North. Farsi and Dari
(based on the Kabul dialect) and Tajik are mutually intelligible. Farsi,
Dari and Tajik are the terms the governments use.
Tajik is based on the vernacular with considerable Uzbek influence. Farsi
and Dari follow classical persian more closely. vowel qualities are an
obvious distinguishing marker. Farsi has its own modern developments. DAri
is quite conservative. Tajik has its own reductions based on the Dari
system.
