: I was telling a friend that in Spanish we use the word tocayo or
: tocaya, depending on the gender, for a person who has the same name as
: yours. Thus, I would address someone called Howard as tocayo and he
: would answer by calling me tocayo. My friend related that in several
: African languages there are more specific names for various family
: members so that a maternal uncle and a paternal uncle would have two
: different words but he couldn't remmeber in which languages this was
: applicable and what these words might be.

well, arabic is spoken as a native language in Africa, so you have xa:l
(maternal) and 3am (paternal).

but many languages have this distinction elswhere. turkish does: amca
(c=*dj*) paternal (< arabic) and dayI (mmaternal).

: Would anybody happen to know what these langauges might be and the
: terms used therein?

: Thanks.
