: Yusuf B Gursey,
: it sounds to me that they are one and the same. However, Tajiks speak
: with a different accent, and their langugage maybe a dialect.
persian speaking Afghanis are also called "Tajiks", and Tajikistanis
(Tajiks of Tajikistan) also on occassion call their language "Dari".
all of these "persian" speakers regard classical persian literature as
part of "their" literary heritage.
Farsi, Dari and Tajik are very close and for everyday purposes (unless you
are going to write an official document and things like that) may be
regarded as as dialects of persian. Tajik stands out as a written language
based on the modern vernacular and not bound by classical persian at all.
Enc. Iranica "Afghanistan" details the differences between Afghani persian
(Dari) and Iranian persian (Farsi). Enc. of Islam Ii "Tajikistan" provides
soem information on Tajiki.

:> : There is a Farsi/Dari speaking minority within Afghanistan who live
:> : mainly in Kabul. Are they the same as the Tajikis? Or are they 2
:> : different things?
:>
:> it's about 40% of the population and one of the 2 official languages of
:> the country. another important center is Herat. there are also speakers in
:> the North alnog the Tajik border, also the Uzbek one, amongst Uzbeks.
:>
:> ethnically they are usually refered to as Tajiks. linguistically there isa
:> dialect continuum between essentailly Iranian persian (Farsi) in Herat to
:> the Kabul dialect to the Tajik dialect in the North. Farsi and Dari
:> (based on the Kabul dialect) and Tajik are mutually intelligible. Farsi,
:> Dari and Tajik are the terms the governments use.
:>
:> Tajik is based on the vernacular with considerable Uzbek influence. Farsi
:> and Dari follow classical persian more closely. vowel qualities are an
:> obvious distinguishing marker. Farsi has its own modern developments. DAri
:> is quite conservative. Tajik has its own reductions based on the Dari
:> system.
