Of all the French classes I took in the U.S., none was ever taught by a
native speaker of French. The same was true for German. Even in the
case of Spanish, only one teacher was actually a native speaker; several
of the others had the imperfect knowledge of the language that one can
obtain by growing up with parents who are native speakers--but sometimes
that's worse than not speaking the language at all, except for students
who prefer to learn vulgar Mexican slang instead of real Spanish.
