You don't like "linguistician", as I proposed earlier?

An adept at mathematics is a mathematician; at logic, a logician;
at metaphysics, a metaphysician; at cosmetics, a cosmetician, etc.

A better analogy can be had with gymnastics. The skilled practitioner
of the art is the gymnast; the gymnastician observes steatopygically
from the sidelines; he will however unfailingly carp at the presumed
shortcomings of the athlete.

But I like your term. It will have to pass muster with that querulous little
prig who objected to my term with an outré allusion to sclerotic mammaries.
He has something against me and the U.S. Army. I and the Army will
soldier on. He was probably a draft-dodger.
