When buying a British shavehook this morning (they were fresh out of
Mukkinese ones), I noticed on the label that it boasted an "integral
tang for extra durability". Being intrigued by what was clearly a
technical term, I looked it up later in my NSOED, which informed me
that a tang is "A pointed projection on the blade of a knife, chisel,
file, or other implement by which the blade is held firmly in the
handle, stock, etc." In other words, the bit of the chisel or file
etc that you usually never see.
Live & learn, eh? Or, as one might put it: (Eng.) Tang: little I
know.
